DC Dispatch February 14, 2012: Designated Parent or Babysitter?
If mother = designated parent, does father = babysitter? The US Census Bureau may look at it that way. For purposes of data tracking, a "child care arrangement" is what a mother has when she works outside the home. But when a father goes to earn income, and the mother is providing the care, it's not treated the same way for statistical purposes. Many voices have been raised about the accuracy of data collection in regards to work and parenting, and how policies based upon it reflect and perpetuate gender discrimination. The Motherlode blog at The New York Times and Kristen Maschka's post are two of them.
